IELTS Exam Day Essentials: What to Bring and What to Avoid

Preparing the right items before your IELTS test day is just as important as practicing your skills. Bringing the correct documents and following the rules can save you from the risk of being denied entry or disrupting your exam. While many candidates focus solely on test-taking strategies, it’s equally crucial to know exactly what you can and cannot bring into the test room. Make sure to review these guidelines carefully before exam day.

1. Essential Items You Must Bring

  • The most important and absolutely mandatory item is your original identification document. This can be either your passport or your national ID card, depending on what you used during your IELTS registration. The exam staff will verify your ID details against the registration data, and if you bring the wrong type of ID or a photocopy, you will not be allowed to sit the test.
  • Your ID will be checked at least twice: first during the check-in process, and again before the Speaking test. In both cases, invigilators or examiners will carefully confirm your identity. You don’t need to bring printed photos, as your picture will be taken on-site during check-in to match your registration record.
  • For the IELTS on Computer format, pencils and paper for note-taking will be provided by the test center. This helps minimize personal items in the exam room, ensuring safety and fairness for all candidates.

2. Rules for Storing Personal Belongings

You may bring your phone to the test venue, but it must be completely switched off before entering the room. It will be stored in a designated secure area along with your other personal items such as wallets, unnecessary documents, cards, electronic devices, or anything unrelated to the exam. These storage areas are supervised by the test center staff to ensure security throughout the session.

3. Items You Should Not Bring into the Test Room

Although there is a secure storage area, the IELTS test center advises candidates to avoid bringing valuable items such as jewelry, luxury watches, large amounts of cash, or expensive electronics.

The following items are strictly prohibited inside the test room:

  • Mobile phones, recorders, cameras, or any other electronic devices
  • Keys, wallets, handbags, or backpacks
  • Mechanical or digital watches
  • Food and drinks (except a clear, label-free water bottle)
  • Any personal items not directly related to the test

Following these regulations will not only help you avoid penalties or disqualification but also contribute to a safe, fair, and professional testing environment for everyone.
